Suggested Reading
The Darkest Days of the War, the Battles of Iuka and Corinth by Peter
Cozzens. An outstanding achievement and the most detailed "you are there"
treatment of the campaign. If you only read one book, this is the one. 1997, University of
North Carolina Press, ISBN , still in print.
Banners to the Breeze, the Kentucky Campaign, Corinth and Stones River,
by Earl Hess. I am impressed by the scope and detail in here - the Corinth section is
outstanding, as are the Perryville and Stones River portions. 2000, University of Nebraska
Press, ISBN , still in print.
The Second Texas Infantry, From Shiloh to Vicksburg by Joseph E Chance. A
great read that uses many primary sources to let the soldiers do the talking. The Corinth
section has tremendous detail from letters and diaries from both sides. If you are a
member of the 2nd TX for the event, or just want a good TX regimental history, grab this
one. 1984 Eakin Press, Austin ISBN -x. I got mine at Shiloh NMP - and saw them
at the Corinth CW Interpretive Center as well.
Blue and Gray Magazine Corinth and Iuka Volume XIX Issue 6, 2002.
Outstanding maps, photos and modern photos, superbly written narrative by Stacy Allen
(Chief Historian, Shiloh NMP). Check out www.bluegraymagazine.com. Unfortunately they do
not have any copies of this issue left at the magazine but you can get it via mail from
Shiloh NMP and Corinth CW Interpretation Center.
Battles and Leaders - adequate section on the campaign.
Rosecrans Meets Price, The Battle of Iuka Mississippi by Ben Kitchens.
Full treatment of Iuka, with some good period maps, but strangely, no modern maps of the
battle. Good period and modern photos. 1987, Thornburg Publishing Florence Alabama, ISBN
. Find it at the Corinth CWIC.
The Official Records - you can order the specific Corinth reports plus
maps in a small book called Incidents in the American Civil War, Battle of Corinth 1862
from Honors Press 1805 Hermitage Dr Florence, AL 35630.
In Deadly Earnest, the History of the First Missouri Brigade CSA, by
Philip Gottschalk. An outstanding unit history of some of the best troops in either army.
Easy to find (start with Camp Pope Bookshop). Columbia MO 1991.
There are excellent regimentals on the 8th Wisconsin, 3rd LA (Tunnard's great book) and
any number of Illinois units and Iowa. See the Camp Pope Bookshop for a good selection.
There are many more of course but the above is a good start. There is a curious book
called "The Lost Account of the Battle of Corinth" by Monroe Cockrell (1955)
which does not cover any new ground but is interesting nonetheless because it reproduces
the immediate post battle photos in large format - most historians are skeptical about the
narrative. Cockrell discovered the narrative in a house in Corinth penned by an unknown
author.
